The on-line continuing education courses offered by the National Academy of Opticianry are made for optical licensing renewal. The credits earned from these courses can also go to renewing the optician's American Board of Opticianry (ABO) or the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) certification. To renew your certification it is required to obtain twelve (12) credits per renewal period. A wide variety of courses are available with each course ranging anywhere from one (1) to four (4) credits per course.
Once at the Continuing Education homepage you will be offered a list of courses to take with a brief description about the course. In the description you will be told what type of credits you will receive whether it be American Board of Opticianry (ABO) or National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE). It will also tell you how many credits you will receive and the cost of taking that course. If you become a member of the National Academy of Opticianry each Continuing Education credit will cost fifteen dollars, if you are not a member the cost of each credit is forty-five dollars. To become a member of the National Academy of Opticianry membership dues are seventy-five dollars annually.
To take the course you must first register and login to the website, once there choose which course you would like to take. Open up the text document, read and review the material. When you feel you are ready to take the exam click on the exam you wish to take. Each course requires an 80% to receive a passing grade; upon completion of the exam you will be notified immediately whether you have successfully passed. Once you have passed the course your certifying credits will be mailed to you immediately.
